DR.
CAROL CHANNING & HARRY KULLIJIAN FOUNDATION FOR THE ARTS
The return
to the teaching of the arts in the public schools in the State of
California requires that the State and its citizens reevaluate,
reexamine and rethink the benefits to be derived from a complete and
adequate education that includes exposure to the arts as a part of the
regular curriculum. Education, not only in the arts but education as a
whole in California and throughout the United States must be lifted to a
considerably higher priority. If we do not act upon this soon and begin
serious discussions about remedying this increasingly serious lack of
the standards for which this country was known, we are at risk to lose
the main ingredient of the world class goals of a true democracy.

FACT: # 1:
National Research by the majority of educational
institutions including the National Endowment for the Arts, affirm that
the general public is unaware of the necessity of arts in the schools or
the lack thereof. The cultural, social, educational and life time value
of the arts provides better students with better test scores and better
attendance and thereby adds to a stronger society, culture and economy.
This far exceeds the imagined public perception the purpose of the arts
is only for creating and/or subsidizing artists. This premise must be
proven to be false.
|
FACT; #2:
Approximately 30% of the estimated 6 ˝ million students in the State
of California are dropouts from public education. When considering
the approximately 16 years of education that a student can receive
(from kindergarten at age 5 through completion of a four year
college or university course at age 21), there are approximately 2
million who drop-out of school.
|
FACT: #3:
In order to formulate a strategy designed to include the
Arts as a part of a full and adequate education requires
logistical planning and long term financial commitments. The
training of instructors to teach the arts becomes a subsequent need.
|
FACT: #4:
A new vision and PRIORITY must be given to the entire
educational system in order to make it the most efficient, engaging,
enlightening and inspiring system on the face of the earth.
Mediocrity cannot be acceptable to any nation that wishes to maintain
its cutting edge and leadership in a fast changing world.

PROPOSAL
BY THE CHANNING-KULLIJIAN FOUNDATION - 2008
During the past two years, The foundation has been visiting
California State Universities. Dr. Channing personally lectures
university master classes and visits nearby high schools. Dr.
Carol Channing performs in the theatre on campus raising funds for the
university and contributes her personal funds to a scholarship
endowment program for the arts. This effort will continue
through 2008 and 2009. During 2006 and 2007 visits to 12 campuses have
been successfully inspired with a hope for change and a Dr. Carol
Channing endowment for the arts.
Dr. Channing will be touring throughout the state of California
with the "California POPS Orchestra" bringing the message of raising
the standard of education by the inclusion of arts within the school
curriculum as necessary to complete an adequate education." The tour
is scheduled to begin during the summer of 2008.
Strategy Date: Summer 2008 – 2009 Research from the Centre of the Artes, in San Marcos California,
states that 93% of the students in elementary schools of California,
have never seen a music teacher.. A grant from a manufacturer has
proposed to give musical instruments into school districts where
families can least afford to have them. The County Superintendents
will be asked to seek the more qualified districts according to their
research. It is hoped that this proposal can begin as soon as possible
in 2008.
Strategy Date: 2008 – 2009 – 2010 Dr. Channing is preparing films and audio public service
announcements (PSA’s) that will be used throughout the state. These
PSA’s will include comments and words of support from renowned artists
and celebrities. It is hoped that the understanding voice of the
people will hear the heartfelt desire and absolute necessity of so
great a cause. Strategy Date: 2008
The strategies outlined above are only a start as to what will be done
by the Foundation with the help of the State of California. It is our
