DR.
CAROL CHANNING & HARRY KULLIJIAN FOUNDATION FOR THE ARTS
The return
to the teaching of the arts in the public schools in the State of
California requires that the State and its citizens reevaluate,
reexamine and rethink the benefits to be derived from a complete and
adequate education that includes exposure to the arts as a part of the
regular curriculum. Education, not only in the arts but education as a
whole in California and throughout the United States must be lifted to a
considerably higher priority. If we do not act upon this soon and begin
serious discussions about remedying this increasingly serious lack of
the standards for which this country was known, we are at risk to lose
the main ingredient of the world class goals of a true democracy.

FOR THE ARTS
|
The stated
purposes of The Channing-Kullijian Foundation is to launch a
statewide awareness campaign heralding the benefits of Arts back
into the curriculum of public schools of California and to
provide musical instruments for low income school districts and

Whereas, national research provides overwhelming evidence that students
exposed to the arts perform better academically with schools
reaching higher levels of attendance
Whereas,
national research recognizes that creativity generated by the
arts stimulate the studies of math and science, as reading,
music, and the performing arts strengthen the self-esteem of
students;
Whereas,
the arts
provide a fundamental aid and tool in expression and
communication which enhances the work place, society and
culture;
Whereas, a recent
Gallup Poll, (USA Today 6/12/08) stated that 57% of the
population favor more funding for education; |
|
Whereas,
Santa
Barbara research determined that one of four students
drop out of school. Dr. Meryl Goldberg, Centre for the Artes at
CSU San Marcos, estimates that 92% of elementary school students
in CA have never seen a music teacher;
Be it
Resolved,
The Foundation
will use its resources to network a statewide alliance with
local partners for the arts to inform and inspire the people of
California to support arts in education and education of the
arts in our public schools.
Quote
Carol Channing
"It’s
got to be included in education because what it does, it
fertilizes young minds. When they are exposed to the arts, they
get brighter in everything else. That’s what happened to me."
